Module 4: Vermicomposting
Vermicomposting is a method of recycling organic waste into vermicompost, a nutrient-rich soil amendment, using worms. This module contains hands-on activities to engage students in methods for data collection and demonstrate the power of decomposers!
Activity
In this activity, students will interact with composting worms in a vermicompost bin. They will explore how aspects of the bin design create ideal conditions for composting worms.
Activity
Students will set up a week-long decomposition experiment using worms to understand the basics of vermicomposting. They will make qualitative and quantitative observations about the decomposition of a food item to learn how surface area plays a role in the composting process.
