Module 5: Community Composting
Composting at the community scale is important for local food waste reduction. However, there are many considerations communities must acknowledge when planning a neighborhood composting hub.
The projects and activities below are designed to have students think critically about what is needed to compost in their communities.
Class Activity: Compost City Council Meeting
Overview: Students will engage in a debate simulating a city council meeting to discuss the implementation of a new community composting hub. Each student will take on a unique role and contribute to the discussion, either for or against the composting hub.
Group Activity: Community Composting + Google Earth
Students will utilize web tools, including the free online GIS software Google Earth Pro, and federal and regional databases, to identify optimal locations for community composting centers. They will also assess the site's physical characteristics and create a socioeconomic profile of the surrounding community.
